Calling to Action by Linda Ajello - Megan's mom
We have been fortunate that many have taken an interest in the hard work that these special workers do. So many have taken the time to order shirts for dance competitions, socks for sweet sixteens, mousepads for advertising.
We thank all those who have hired PossibiliTees and who have entrusted us with your visons, advertising needs, and who have spread the word about PossibiliTees.
Now as a parent of a multiply handicapped child- I FEEL IT IS OUR TURN TO GIVE BACK AND TO ALSO CONTRIBUTE.
Our children have many needs and also so many talents. At Possibiltees we have seen blind children work on silk screening shirts, those who have very challenged hand use, use folders to fold shirts, those who can not walk clean screens, those who cannot read run computers.
I have asked several politicans to visit our worksite. I have had Megan use her personal Cricut Expression machine to make handmade invitations to politicians asking them to visit teh PossibiliTees site. I have been relentless, as have my relatives, in pursuing accounts for PossibilTees.
Megan is just a freshman in high school. many have kids older than Megan and are out of school- their child's needs are even more urgent for a productive workplace and place in society as a productive, generous citizen.
I firmly believe that PossibilTees is a place my child may be employed as an adult for a few hours a week. However, begging politicans to visit us and place PossibilTees in a bigger building, begging businesses to buy products can not be the responsibility of so few people.
I call to action ALL parents of those who work or do work study at PossibiliTees to speak to a politican face to face about budget needs. Go to the PTA of the school where your child graduated and you and your child should ask them to order products from PossibiliTees.
Have your child make a thank you card or call those who have supported PossibiliTees.
If the child were not developmentally disabled, perhaps they would be on a travel soccer team. You would perhaps attend the games. Perhaps they would be in dance competitions. You would at least show up to see the dance school. Sadly enough, some parents who are able, have not seen the workplace of PossibiliTees- you are missing out. You have not seen the smiles of the kids working as they finish a product. It is something to see a child who can not hold a scissors make a printed mousepad without assistance.
I am asking that we as parents of those with disabilities do what we can to garner the support of
the powers that be so we can have PossibiliTees move to a larger, more appropriate site and continue to employ those with disabilities.
We must work together if we want our kids to be employed, contibuting cititzens. As parents we cannot delegate this responsibility soley to school or agencies. They are our kids.
I am calling to action all of us to rally our politicians, find new accounts, wirte thank you notes to those who support PossibiliTees and most of all for us as parents to directly work with our kids in all they do so they can imagine the PossibiliTees.
